Little, Little Leaf

One morning, as I looked outside my window, I noticed a tree had a bright green, shiny little leaf at the very top of the tree. I noticed the leaf was chatting away, I believe this is what I heard it say:

“Today it is me on the top

of the tree”, yelled the green pointy leaf

 to all he could see.

“You see, You see, it is me!

“I am at the top of this beautiful tree, for everyone to see.”

“Do not boast!” said a large, green leaf

beneath the proud pointy leaf on the top of the tree.

“It was me at the top just a moment ago,

and it passed quicker than you could possibly know.

“We have all had a turn at being on top,

it is your turn today

so, to you I say”:

“Enjoy the View

Stand straight and Tall

you are able to shine, more than us all.

There will be days you want to shrivel,

then days you want to praise

there will be days you feel honored,

and days you want to laze.

But time is time, and it will not halt

not even for you at the very top.

So, Make the best of your turn

and enjoy every moment.

Allow the breeze to sway you

Let the rain and clouds fill you with power

 to accept that one day

you will no longer tower.

The little leaf grew sad and sweated and shriveled,

 his time had come

early, OH NO!

“I will be happy and proud and will not go!!

So, his days as the top leaf

allowed him to see, that time halts for no one,

not even a tree.

What do you do?

I was asked again yesterday, So, “What do you do?”Even if this question is merely for small talk, it stops me in my tracks. My mind goes blank.

Do you really want to know what I do? I think inside my head.

My brain wants to say, I’m a writer, but my mouth says, “I’m at home”.

I have three kids- I say, wanting to use that as an excuse to validate my own existence. I oversee a house, a family, I make sure they eat what they like, and that their homework is done. I make sure their clothes are the right size and that they sleep comfortably.

I am one step before them, hearer of their wants, listener of their wishes. An encourager. I am the voice that comforts them when they fall. I make sure they know that the world is theirs, and that nothing is impossible. I guide them, teaching them consistency and responsibility.

When they are at school- I try to live out everything I have said to them, and yet, here I am detained by my own self.

What do you do? Do you really want to know?
